August has been an exciting month, starting with newly promoted Burnley hosting last season’s Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League winners Man City. Pep Guardiola’s side won on matchday one, as expected, and most pundits expect them to make it four EPL titles on the bounce. Undoubtedly, the cash-rich treble winners are good enough to dominate, but will they deliver again under increased pressure?

Man City isn’t the only team worth following this season, and there are some intriguing sidenotes. Can Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham get back into the running? Does Man Utd have what it takes to challenge again? Knowing the answers to these questions could help you land a profit when gambling at the best sportsbook betting apps.

Early front-runners

Man City raised the curtain on the Premier League 2023/24 season by beating Burnley at Turf Moor before the eyes of the watching world. The Clarets have a fascinating backstory as they returned to the top division, but City didn’t allow that to spoil their day. Pep Guardiola’s troops were professional, winning 3-0 on the road.

The Cityzens followed victory over Burnley with a hard-fought 1-0 home win against Newcastle United on match day two. Six points on the board, four goals scored, and zero conceded meant City picked up where they left off last term. A safe bet to challenge and a team that’ll always give supporters a run for their money throughout the campaign.

Brighton is another side with a 100% record after two games, winning both games, scoring eight goals, and conceding two. The Seagulls are hungry for success; fans hope this is the year they grab silverware. A top-four or European finish would be marvelous, but a long road lies ahead. They hammered newly-promoted Luton 4-1 at home and beat Wolves at Molineux by the same score. A perfect start.

The third and final team to impress us in August is Arsenal. The Gunners impressed last season, dominating the title race before falling off the pace in the closing stages. The Londoners lacked the staying power to get over the line, allowing Man City to pass near the finish. But they’ve made a strong start, winning two, scoring three, and conceding one. Arsenal beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 and Crystal Palace 1-0.

Improvement is in the post

It’s exciting times for Man City, Arsenal, and Brighton fans, but others will challenge as soon as they find their feet. Tottenham, Liverpool, and West Ham are all under pressure to deliver following dreadful performances last season, and the ambitious sides are already challenging.

Tottenham ended level with fellow Londoners Brentford on matchday one, battling to a 2-2 draw on the road. Better was expected and arrived when Spurs beat Man Utd 2-0 at home in week two. It was a fascinating encounter and an atmosphere the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hadn’t seen before. There’s now a belief in the Tottenham team that they can challenge.

Liverpool needed a solid finish to salvage a European finish from last season, and they’ve started this term strongly. The Reds drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea but beat Bournemouth 3-1 at Anfield next time. Liverpool and Chelsea are on a long run of draws, but getting a point from the bridge is an outstanding achievement.

West Ham has blown hot and cold recently, challenging for a top-four finish and then battling against relegation. Remember, they won the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, too. The Hammers have invested in their squad following that European run and won four of six points. They ended 1-1 away to Bournemouth and beat Chelsea 3-1 in a thriller.

These teams must do better

It’s early in the season, but some teams are already struggling, and some fans fear the worst. No side has been more disappointing in August than Everton, who is rock bottom of the table. Is the Toffees too famous to be relegated? Don’t count on it; we’ve lost some powerhouses from the EPL.

Everton began the season with a 1-0 home defeat to Fulham before suffering a 4-0 loss against Aston Villa. Everton’s poor form isn’t a surprise, but it is more challenging for fans to stomach. The club must bounce back and assemble a run of wins before it’s too late.
