David Yarrow explores the history of modern photography 

The history of photography as we know it today is relatively short. It’s a story that primarily begins in the mid-19th century – barely a blink of an eye ago, historically speaking. Short as it may be, it’s a fascinating tale. It’s also something of enormous interest to many, including David Yarrow. Yarrow is an internationally renowned photographer and conservationist based in London.

Modern photography has its roots in two critical discoveries. One such discovery concerned camera obscura image projection. The other centred around historical observations detailing how substances become visibly altered by light exposure. These discoveries would ultimately culminate in what today amounts to modern photography.

Early history

All of the cameras loved by David Yarrow and his peers have theoretical roots dating back thousands of years. Yet, their core history starts in the 18th century for the most part. No artefacts or descriptions indicating any attempts to capture images via what we now consider photographic principles exist before this time.

It was then another 100 years until the word “photography” was coined. The term is generally attributed to the mathematician, inventor, and experimental photographer Sir John Herschel. Born out of the Greek for “drawing with light,” Herschel first used the word in the late 1830s.

Herschel’s work would eventually form the basis of the equipment used by photographers such as David Yarrow today. Much of his ground-breaking research first came to light in the springtime of 1839, when the mathematician and inventor saw it presented at the Royal Society in London.

Photography in the 1800s

Photographic techniques grew more advanced during the second half of the 19th century. The mid-1850s also saw the launch of the Liverpool Photographic Journal. Still published today as the British Journal of Photography and regularly featuring the works of the likes of David Yarrow, the original journal chronicled the rapidly advancing photography field of the time.

Colour photography, for example, first appeared in 1861, much to the delight of the journal’s readers – the David Yarrow photographer-calibre professionals of their era. So-called “snapshot” short exposure photography was then born in 1878 with the discovery of heat-ripening gelatin emulsions. Pioneering high-speed photographic techniques arrived for the first time during the same year.

Ten years then passed before the introduction of the first celluloid film base. The following year, the Eastman Kodak Company launched its first-ever simple handheld box camera, while the Folding Pocket Kodak followed precisely a decade later.

Modern-day photography

As the turn of the next century dawned, the photography field continued to evolve. The year 1900 marked Kodak’s introduction of its first Brownie model camera – an inexpensive and hugely pioneering point-and-shoot device. Fast-forward a further century, and photographers like David Yarrow have witnessed massive evolution even in the barely two decades since the millennium. Highlights include the first commercially available camera-equipped mobile phones and the development of super-high-resolution digital camera sensors equalling 100 megapixels or more.
